Everyone involved with Shropshire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the recent passing of our former membership secretary Albert Barkley.
Albert was born in 1935 and grew up in the Ellesmere area. Following National Service, he completed his apprenticeship and became a successful painter and decorator.
He served on the Shropshire CCC committee for over 30 years before retiring in 2023. He was a well-known and popular figure on grounds throughout the county and beyond.
A keen golfer and local footballer, Albert captained Frankton Cricket Club, as an all-rounder, for some 20 years. He was famed for never to be seen not wearing his club cap when bowling!
He played a significant role in the development and progress of the Hardwick Park club as Frankton became a Shropshire County Cricket League premier division club.
Speaking on behalf of the county club, Shropshire CCC chairman John Hulme said: “Albert made a very large contribution to Shropshire cricket after joining the committee in 1992. His hard work as membership secretary and tireless service in fund raising were built upon his strong, local sporting and business links.
“He was immensely proud of his Shropshire roots, having served with The King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in Kenya during the Mau Mau rebellion in the late 1950s. He was passionate about Shropshire cricket until the end.
“He was much loved and one of life’s true characters with always a tale to tell. Shropshire’s NatWest Trophy victory over Ireland in Dublin, finals at Lord’s and the subsequent lifting of the Minor Counties Trophy at Durham were occasions he would recall with special enthusiasm.
“A kind and considerate man, who gave much to the local community, he was ever generous in his time for others.
“He will not be forgotten for his long and dedicated service to the county club. Above all, he will be remembered for the high value he placed upon the spirit and rich traditions of the game which were as important as the winning, if not more so.
“Our thoughts are very much with Audrey and the family.”
Albert’s funeral will take place at Pentrebychan Crematorium, Rhostyllen, Wrexham LL14 4E on Wednesday, June 4 at 11.15am.
