Shropshire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of committee member John McIntear.
John, a cricket umpire, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2018.
It prevented him from standing for long periods, but such was John’s determination to remain involved with cricket, he raised funds last year for a powered wheelchair to help him carry out his duties as an umpire at grounds around the county.
John recently launched Sports Officiating from a Powered Wheelchair (SOPW), a campaign to encourage national charities and organisations to fund powered wheelchairs for disabled people wishing to officiate in any sport.
Shropshire County Cricket Club chairman John Hulme said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of John’s passing. John was a much valued member of the Shropshire County Cricket Club committee and made an enormous contribution behind the scenes in a number of ways.
“John was responsible for the registration of Shropshire CCC players and also the administration of umpires and scorers.
“He had a great love of cricket and his enthusiasm was infectious. He was an inspiration to many with his determination to continue umpiring and then launching Sports Officiating from a Powered Wheelchair.
“Our thoughts are very much with John’s family and friends at this very sad time.”
