Everyone connected with Shropshire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Harold Banks, one of our former players.
A left-hand middle order batsman and off-spin bowler, Harold was a talented all-rounder who played for Gloucestershire’s 2nd XI before making his Shropshire debut in 1970.
A Much Wenlock man, Harold joined Shrewsbury Cricket Club in 1977 from Bridgnorth Cricket Club.
He captained Shrewsbury from 1980 to 1981 and was member of the London Road club’s team that memorably won the historic National Club Championship final against Hastings at Lord’s in 1983.
Harold also played football for Bridgnorth Town in the Midland Combination and was a keen crown green bowler.
Shropshire County Cricket Club chairman John Hulme said: “Harold was very much an accomplished all rounder. He was a great thinker of the game.
“He had developed his game at Cricket Meadow from playing alongside some of Shropshire’s finest players at a time when Bridgnorth were a dominant force, not only inside the county but beyond.
“After also representing Shropshire in the early 1970s, Harold joined Shrewsbury and he played an important role in the club’s journey to Lord’s in 1983, taking some vital wickets on the way.
“Harold later went on to captain the club’s 2nd XI where many a young player learnt from his experience and wisdom. He also represented Shropshire’s over-50s.
“He was a team man. Ever modest, he never spoke of his own achievements, but was one to enjoy the success of others.
“He was a popular and warmly liked player with always a sporting tale to tell. He will be much missed. Our thoughts are very much with his family.”
Harold’s funeral is at Shrewsbury Crematorium on Thursday, July 17 at 12.30pm.
