Everyone associated with Shropshire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Jones, a former chairman of the club between 1986 and 1994.
Mike was also involved with Shrewsbury Cricket Club for many years, progressing from playing for the London Road club to becoming chairman, and he made so many friends through his love of cricket.
In paying tribute, Shropshire CCC chairman John Hulme said: “We were deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Mike. Affectionately known as ‘Alphabet’ Jones, MPTWJ was a fine servant and ambassador to the county club, having been a member of the committee for nearly 40 years.
“His administrative knowledge of Minor/National Counties cricket was almost without equal, founded on many years of dedicated service.
“He held the office of chairman from 1986 to 1994, following on from Geoff Othen, before being succeeded by the late John Bennett.
“Mike played an important role in both financial and membership matters. He will be well remembered for his warmth and kindness. Ever the diplomat, courteous by nature and impeccably dressed, he was a popular figure on grounds around the county and beyond. The famed black brief case holding the all important match expenses rarely left his side. The case, like its carrier, had many a tale to tell!
“Mike also enjoyed a long association with Shrewsbury Cricket Club as a player, junior coach, club official, becoming chairman, and life member.
“His love and enthusiasm for Shropshire cricket never dimmed. He remained a keen student of the game until the very end and he will always be remembered with both fondness and affection.
“Mike had been a friend and ‘pal’ to so many over the years. Our thoughts are very much with Adrienne and the family.”
Mike’s funeral will be held at Emstrey Crematorium, Shrewsbury on Saturday, January 3 at 10.45am, and afterwards at Shrewsbury Cricket Club. All donations to the MND Association.
