Worfield Cricket Club will host an attractive match between Shropshire and first-class neighbours Worcestershire this summer.

The NCCA Showcase Game, a 50 overs per side contest, will take place at Worfield on Tuesday, July 7.

Showcase fixtures provide National Counties Association clubs with an opportunity to play against a first-class county.

Shropshire have faced Derbyshire at Shifnal and Yorkshire at Wellington in recent years, as well as Worcestershire at Shrewsbury in 2023, a fixture which was abandoned at the halfway stage owing to rain.

Shropshire CCC chairman John Hulme said July’s match against Worcestershire is one to really look forward to.

He added: “It’s pleasing that we will have the opportunity to play Worcestershire, our near neighbours, in this year’s NCCA Showcase Game.

“We have a long association with the club and many close ties, so it will be nice for our players to have the chance to test themselves against first-class opposition once again.

“We hope the fixture will generate plenty of interest in the county.

Significant strides

“We are delighted that Worfield Cricket Club have kindly agreed to host the game. Shropshire is blessed with a number of grounds very rich in character. Davenport Park is no exception. It is a lovely place where to watch cricket.

“Worfield is a club that’s made significant strides in recent years and we look forward to visiting.”

A number of players have played for Worcestershire in recent years after earlier representing Shropshire, including Ed Barnard, Joe Leach, Jack Shantry, Joe Clarke, Richard Oliver, Dillon Pennington and Mitchell Stanley.

Tom Fell, Alexei Kervezee and Ollie Westbury are among the players to have moved in the opposite direction from New Road to play for Shropshire.

The current Worcestershire first-team squad features Shropshire-born duo Jack Home and Harry Darley.

The match at Worfield will be useful for Worcestershire’s preparations ahead of the 50-over One Day Cup getting under way.

Shropshire will open the 2026 National Counties campaign against Cumbria in the NCCA Trophy at Bridgnorth Cricket Club on Sunday, April 26.
